I found a dried hand buried in the crawlspace under the house next door. It was buried beneath a pile of bricks and miscellaneous debris. Our houses shared a common wall and there was a hole in my basement that allowed me access to the dusty crawlspace. This hole was directly above the pile of bricks, near a corner. It was an almost mummified hand, but not quite. It had all five fingers and about half of the palm. The long, oval fingernails had blood-red nail polish and the skin was leathery and had turned blue. A
kindly old woman lived next door but she wasn't home at the moment. Her
young daughter gave me small piece of a shredded photograph that she (the
old woman) wanted me to have. It was just a tiny thing but you could clearly
make out my face either mugging for the camera or unaware that the picture
was being taken, and in my mouth was a still fresh-looking hand... five
fingers and half a palm.
